PVT Adolph Gustov Wehmeyer was the son of German immigrants who settled in Fredericksburg, TX. He enlisted for the First World War on 26 June 1918 and served with Company C, 56th Infantry, and fought in the region of Metz, France.
After the war, Adolph worked as a farmer throughout his life, and passed on 09 February 1974. He lies in rest in Der Stadt Friedhof in Fredericksburg.
When we called his granddaughter Theresa, she burst into tears: 'I can't believe this, just last week I was thinking about my grandfather's medals, wondering what happened to them’.
Theresa and her grandfather Adolph were very close - and she remembers being close with his medals as well. When she was a little girl, she would sit with this Purple Heart cradled in her hands and just stare at it. Even then she knew that it was the most precious thing.
Theresa always understood that her grandfather Adolph was incredibly proud to have served.
We were truly honored to witness the joy that reliving memories of her beloved grandfather brought to Theresa, and we share her awe that Adolph’s Purple Heart made its way back home to her adoring hands after so many years apart.
